Coconut chaaru(Spiced up coconut milk)

~ Friday, June 19, 2009

When you think of one dish meal(as in,when you too lazy to make a dal,fry and all that)you can resort to this. I chanced upon this from a hand-written recipe book which comes to our rescue over and over. Before I go off for the weekend, here's the recipe.

Serves 2
Preparation time - 10-15mins

Ingredients:
Thick coconut milk - 1/2 cup
Thin coconut milk - 1 cup
Lemon juice - 2tb spoons(adjust)
Salt - 3/4 tb spoon

To be roasted and ground:
Red chllies - 2-3
Jeera/ Cumin - 1spoon
Pepper - 1/2 spoon

For tempering:
Mustard seeds - 1/2 spoon
jeera/Cumin - 1/4 spoon
Chana dal/Split gram dal - 3/4 tb spoon
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Red chillies - 2
Hing/Asafoetida - 1 pinch

Oil - 1 tb spoon

Procedure:
1.Heat oil in a pan/wok and roast red chillies, jeera and pepper for 2 minutes.Don't let them turn brown.
2. After the spices are cooled, powder them coarsely in a grinder.
3. Heat oil in a pan. Add all the things listed under tempering section.
4. After the dals give out a nice fragrance, add coconut milk and roasted powder.
5. Mix them all together for a minute. Don't boil as the coconut milk may curdling. Add salt and mix it.

It goes with plain rice and appadam/pickle very well.
